Thunder and Lightning

Lighting and Thunder

By Pauline Harris

(*)

Circulation of winds

Began to form

Building the clouds

Way up high

In the sky

Intensifying

The tension surrounding

All of us

We began to feel

The effects

Of the building storms

Stiffness

And shortness of breath

A sudden streak

Spread the light

Across great distances

From the sky

Down to the ground

And brash of thunder

Vibrated everything

Nearby

The storm had arrived

Pounding droplets

Of intense downfalls

The rain poured down

Unto the ground

Causing floods

To rush the water

Across what was once

The streets in this town

Now waterways

Rushing the water

All around

Searching

Seeking shelter

Above the floods

Pondering each decision made

We search on

Trying to keep

Our chips up

We don’t want to drown

Wiping our faces

We see a safe place

We go there

And find comfort

These walls seem solid

Firm is the ground

Less thunder

Less rain

The storm

Moves along

Comforted

We settle in

And are grateful

The freak storm

Is gone goodbye

Inspired by an earlier writing of mine…

whispering wind acknowledges the impact of “thunder” and lets “thunder” talk loudly and lets the light settle within…(inspired by a thunder friend)

A Day Unlike Any Other

A Day Unlike Any Other

By Pauline Harris

(*)

Mundane to start

Rustled out of bed

Partly wanting to stay

Yet, excited for the day

To become real

For so long we had

Practiced and prepared

For the moment ahead

Our gear ready

The field all set

Our emotions

All over the place

Until we arrived

And we set our minds

To go out there

With all our might

And do our best

For we were right there

Where we needed to be

The thunder of claps

Echoed around us

As we took to the field

First round over

The skies are darkening

A fever rushes over me

Lightening off in the distance

A sense of fear develops

The booms of thunder

Clash with the screams

All of sudden

We all feel

The thickening

Of the air surrounding us

We gasp

As a clap

Of thunder

Rings around us

Echoing in our ears

Holding still

Trying to focus

Must find shelter

Runs through my head

Searching, searching

And there is a place

A secure place

At least for now

An intense pull

Was leading me there

Calling all to join me

We frantically ran

To find a place secure

And safe to be

To withstand

The coming storm

We got in

Determined

To stay our ground

Just in time

The winds

Rushed

Over us all

Tearing apart

Much outside

These walls

Lights flickered

Sounds of violence

But we stayed put

Until the end

A solemn silence

Let us know

It was over

We gathered

Ourselves

And began

The recovery efforts

Find everyone

Treat the injured

And head home

That is if home

Is still there

If not, rebuilding

Is in the future

We know for now

We survived

And will carry on

Carry on with life

Forward forever

The Sound of Thunder

The Sound of Thunder

By Pauline Harris

(*)

After many days

Of super hot heat

All of us being told

More heat temperatures

Are on their way here

Air conditioners working

Some to their maximum

Many attempts to cool

Without any help

From the weather

Until that lowly sound

A crackle in the smoldering

Then more thunder

Makes it way closer

Bursts of wind

Waves of droplets

Begin to drop

Rain has arrived

Just a little bit

Of much needed

Relief

This rain is welcomed

Here today

Thank you, rain

For relieving us

For a little bit

Many Storms on Horizon

And the storms began

When the sky darkened

Eerie feelings in the air

Winds from that direction

Then others from there

Sprinkles

Then clasps of thunder

Hard raindrops

At times silence

A strange silence

And then more storms

Moving in from all sides

Only to move on through

By Pauline Harris

More Chilly Weather

The brisk winter chill

Arrived again last night

Chilled to the bone

I nestled into bed

Covering with blankets

Thoughts to warm

Dance in my head

Settling to sleep

I am grateful for this rest

The Day It Didn’t Rain

The forecast had said rain
Lots of rain for the week ahead
Plans were set for the plants
To stay outside and get watered
Nature would provide
Nourishment and more
All the neighbors prepared
For the floods to appear
As so often with rains
The water rises
And so does some fears
Geared for this rain
Events were cancelled
And some rescheduled
The weather people exclaim
The importance of being ready
Readying ourselves
We prepared all we could
And the day foretold came
Surely our preperations
Would not go in vain
No rain came that day
Or the next
The weather people
Were distraught
We were confused
How could we have
Been led so far
Astray
Discovering we needed
To prepare for life itself
Some storms may come
But not all predicted
Events come to pass

20 Percent Chance

Last night I watched

The weather forecast
Seeing two separate
Ones, both saying
Chance for rain,
Both said unlikely

But somehow I
Knew we would

During the night
Picturing the full moon
With my camera
No clouds in sight
I thought well maybe
No rain would come
In the morning, I
Saw some dark
Scattered clouds
And checked the weather
Only 20 percent chance
In the early afternoon
Starting to hear some
Rumbles and tricklings
Only 20 percent chance
The sky darkened
Droplets became more
And more and now
I knew one hundred
Percent chance of rain
Pouring hard now
The weather still says
20 percent chance

Misty Rain Visited

Misty Rain Visited

Days of hearing of
expected rain
this system will
bring rain
the next system has
a cold front with it
rain will come
there is a band
coming from here
rain will come
No rain came

A big storm headed
in this direction
rain will come
a dry draft
prevented the system
from fully developing
rain will come
No rain came

High humidity
clouds forming
rain will come
Drops appear
just drops
Bedtime now
dream of rain
dream of a raindance
Dance for rain
And the rains came
Misty rain
Subtle drops
Puddles made
Gentle Rain

The rains did come
Misty rain came to visit
and stay just awhile
The trickle of the drops
Just enough to make a smile
Misty rain did come
