One Orchid

An exciting day
Was planned
For each to see
What we could
Discover

Something unusual
Was out there to find

A field full of poppies
Was where I ran
Far into to hide

To find some peace
And solitude

Only to discover
Amungst the red
Red poppies
Was a secret
Visitor

An solitary orchid
Peaking up
As if to say hi

I left that field
Feeling a joy
Unmeasureable

Thinking back
I wander did anyone
Else ever discover
The orchid among the poppies

Precious Friend

(inspiration:  a soldier carrying a skull in a misty fog)

Years after the long stretch, bloody battle
Finally having the opportunity to set foot
Upon the hallowed grounds where we
Our tormented souls had taken arms
Our country needed us to fight
We knew not who our enemy
Our country needed us to fight
Glory, honour, courage, bravery…we fought
Our neighbours, our friends, our family
To no ends…we fought on
Our country needed us…we fought
War ended…burials became common place
In the misty, damp foggy morning,
I heard the cries of many
Those who fell…gave their all
Among them, my precious friend…no
NO, I could leave her there
Torn …my precious friend deserved better
Somewhere special…a place sacred to her
Wholly holy ground…dear precious one
Away from these tormented, fighting fields
Lost souls will never recover
Innocence taken in the battle heat
Leaps towards gestures of finding closure
Sorted mistakes leaders made carry on
Truthfully, No one wins a war
Casualties, soldiers, families…all never the same
Misty fog takes ahold covering us
My precious friend and I forever

Forever amongst the poppy fields

Surprise amongst the Poppies

One day while living in England, I walked through a field full of poppies.  Mostly red poppies everywhere the eye could see, but for one spot.  There in that one spot was something quite unique compared to all surrounding the area.  In amongst the poppies was a single orchid. I was amazed by this one solo flower growing alone amid the array of poppies. One flower trying to hold its own against the odds…and yet it did…all of the flowers from that day held such beauty…and a little bit of sadness, too. The sadness is for the short time the flowers are here on earth, but then again…gratefulness, for they brought a bit of happiness into my life.  And a memory of a day spent walking through a poppy field to find something quite unique.  An orchid, I chose to keep in my memories and leave for others to discover.
