One Summer With You

One summer years ago, I met you…something just clicked…you made me laugh…we could tell each other stories…we encouraged each other’s imagination and inspired greatness in one another…we supported one another…and yet it was only that one summer we knew each other…twirling hair…flirting…laughing…swimming…dancing…walking…just you and I~Pauline Harris

Aftereffects of One Day

One of things about the reminder for the anniversary was about the representation of one child who said when asked to point out his parents. The child replied, ‘I can’t they (the people coming out of the area) look the same.’ (As the people were all covered in ash from the buildings and beyond). …we all looked the same that day. We were all focused on coming together. We were united in that moment. –pharris

School Daze

School Daze
By Pauline Harris

Excited and nervous
Headed out the door
Backpack and lunch
Ready to go
Long walk
Out the door
By the house
With colourful roses
Dogs barking
Way over there
Keep quiet
Keep on task
No need to wake
Others up
But too late
Run passed them
Or walk calmly
Peacefully
To ourselves
Be respectful
We are guests
Not all friendly
Names called
Many forgotten
Eggs thrown
Shells and gooey mess
They run after us
Wanting to fight
Keep on walking
Running at times
Clean up later
Mustn’t miss the bus
Make it to the bus stop
Five minutes to wait
Take a deep breath
And step onto the bus
Try to get the window seat
To gaze outside
Forget those names
Compose ourselves
We are guest
We represent ours
Respecting each other
We kept our promise
As best we could
The view from the bus
Gave us time
We needed
To ready ourselves
For the day at school

Song In Mind

Song in Mind
By Pauline Harris

A reminder song
It can be just a note
Or a word or phrase
The memory sweeps
Back into consciousness
Bringing with it
Feelings of that moment
A moment in time
Long forgotten
Brushed into now
Smiles and tears
Recall that time
People’s faces
Once blurry
Gone in a hurry
No, wait…
Let me be there
Once again
A distant thought
Gone now
Forgotten again
Until that…
Trigger begins
To bring it all back
Take us back
Or forward
To that place
In motion when all
Will be peaceful
As we remember
Life can be at times

One Day in the 1990s

In light of ongoing events…this memory came to mind
One Day in the 90sBy Pauline Harris

I was on the education staff at a school. This story is not about the students, but a parent.

… mid-day came

A loud pounding

At the front door

The whole building

Seemed to shake

Harsh shouting

Everyone on alert

Although we were not

Sure what was happening

As we were still inside

Working in our classrooms

Maintaining order

Helping students

To remain calm

And try to get them on task

…the yelling outside

Got much more threatening

Lock down was ordered

Although we pretty much

Had already been doing it

But now we were locked in

Away from the door

And remaining calm

Rustling noises came

Bang, shots were fired

And then silence

Police came

No one was killed

No one was injured

Seriously

…the parent was taken

Into custody

The gun was gone

All was secure

And handled appropriately

As we all had trained for

We found out later

The parent was drunk

And in a custody battle

Over their child

…we were prepared

But we never wanted

To use that training

Beforehand we thought

It odd training,

But now it is common

Sadly too frequently used

Her Daydream

Her eyes gazed over
To look yonder
Nothing in particular
To see beyond
But a reflection
Of days to ponder
Past gone by
Memories linger
Waves collapsed
In the mind
As she thinks back
Reflections of pathways
Seem to creep by
Similarities in some
Others purely unique
Conquests shared
Trophies long since faded
Connections grew
To complete networks
A force within awakened
Sparking a new revelation
Creating joy for all
Who beaconed nearby
Fostering new life
And new growth
Through collaboration
And enrichment
Via creative
And wonderment
She returned with a smile
To share with those who care

Song Of Mine

Silently humming
A tune stuck
In my head
Bringing many smiles
Of joy felt
From seeing glimpses
Memories shown within
Keeping the mind alive
Focused upon
The moment is here
Celebrate the joyney
