Number Human

One day, I was a number
No name, a number
I demanded I am my name
No one listened
I sang songs
Of encouragement
And did my best
Some began to notice
Come over here, my dear
Who are you, they cried
I replied my number
No, who are you, they cried
Softly crying I spoke my name
Yes at last, I was me again
I was dignified
No longer a number
I was a whole person
Free to be me
